PAIRS is an object study built from an archive of denim and footwear curated by stylist Jay Kim Valentine. Suspended above the tatami platforms, the installation evokes the ritual of removing one's shoes before finding a seat within the space. Through pieces gathered from multiple owners and histories, the work approaches clothing as material records that accumulate evidence of care across their makers, wearers, and successive lives, revealing dress as an ongoing negotiation between personal memory and cultural history. The everyday act of getting dressed trace how habit, repetition, and dress codes become expressions of identity. By placing fashion history in dialogue with daily wear, she examines a formula of her personal uniform: an aged pair of jeans stacked on a stiletto heel. Collapsing the distinction between the familiar and the ornamental, these pairings suggest that identity is constructed through ritual over novelty. -- Jay Kim Valentine is a stylist, fashion editor, and publisher whose research approaches material culture through fashion history.
